George Kahumoku Jr. is a wonderful man who deserves to have volumes written about him. I will not be the one to write the volumes but I must say that he has talent and feeling for the music and culture, that goes way beyond merely performing. In addition to being a fine musician and cultural ambassador for his people, he is a family man, farmer, teacher, sculptor and story teller. His "Drenched By Music" cd is a fine example of George's mastery of the slack key 12 string guitar. It is also, like the rest of George's music, a learning experience. In "Kaulana Na Pua", George plays out the feelings of generations. George takes the song of sovereignty penned by Ellen Prendergrast in protest of the overthrow of Queen Lili'uokalani and constructs an epic etude. Other songs on the cd include "Kaulana O Kawaihae" with Diana Aki and "E Kupuna Ei Nei", a beautiful song George wrote about his "lost" adopted grandfather.
The other work pictured here is "E Lili'u", a compillation of songs dedicated to Queen Lili'uokalani. Most of the songs were written by "Lili'u" as she was affectionately known. Other songs include "Hawai'i Aloha" and "Kaulana Na Pua"
